Teacher Qualities

Train the Trainer Workshop must be completed by all COS Facilitators and TAFE PEET teachers. All PEET programs are delivered in collaboration with the Outreach Coordinator, the PEET teacher and the Community Offender Service (COS) facilitator. This requires PEET teachers to be skillful collaborators. Apart from standard qualifications teachers must be have a commitment to identifying and meeting the education and training needs of adults with limited access to education.
Qualities of outstanding PEET teachers include being able to establish an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect. They must be authentic, empathetic and have excellent interpersonal skills. Whilst being authentic they must be encouraging, positive and provide meaningful feedback.
Flexibility is essential. Each class should be negotiated so that optimal outcomes are achieved. The teacher cannot be judgmental, they must be open minded and respectful of students individuality. A teacher cannot push their own values, beliefs or solution on to the students. In order to design the program responsively the teacher must be resourceful and have skills in gathering information so to assess strengths and weaknesses alongside goals and dreams. Furthermore the teacher should be energetic and enthusiastic with realistic expectations. Lots of resilience and being unflappable are desirable qualities as well.
